We remove the bark and carefully sand smooth with hand tools; this gives a splinter and snag-free play surface and exposes the beauty of the wood. Removing the bark reduces rot, mitigates insect damage and protects against rough bark drying and falling off. It also exposes where it may be necessary to pin the ends to reduce splitting.
